Mushrooms, Morel Less

I went out hunting mushrooms, a spore-t even I could succeed at.

Kidding--I just stumbled across them by happy accident. (Literally stumbled across them, in one case.)

I hate regular mushrooms. They taste like a 50s horror movie. Still, I must admit that finding edible ones in the wild made my interest ... well ... mushroom a bit. And who doesn't want to have a little fun-gus in their life?

So, at my wife's urging (okay, she made me), I tried one. She fried it up, with a little butter, much the way I like everything cooked except for chocolate. (I like my chocolate covered with a nice thick layer of more chocolate.)

It tasted like pork. I'm not kidding. Unlike mushrooms I've tried in the past, which taste much like unripe raw rubber, these are much Morel tasty. (Now I'm wondering what raw rubber really tastes like.)  It's not a food I'd want every day, but it just goes to show you ... sometimes it's worth giving something new a try.

Before you ask, I was assured by the property owner that if I identified where I found these Morels, I'd end up pushing them up myself.

  1. I would have no idea what mushrooms are safe and what's poisonous.

I don't care for them on their own, but as part of a dish, they're good.

    1. No way would I eat any wild mushroom without consulting someone else first--or maybe two or three someone elses.

But Morels taste absolutely nothing like mushrooms, which I can't handle myself except in very small amounts in a dish.

  2. Haven't tried those but now you've inspired me. Be careful I lost an uncle who ate a wild shroom.

    1. Not to worry -- Morels are the only kind of mushrooms I'd try, and my wife is very good at choosing the right ones.

  3. You're a braver man than me. I love mushrooms but I get the boring ones from a shop I can sue before I die if they've given me toadstools by mistake.

    1. Well, I did pass them by two people who know what they're doing before I agreed to taste one, so I don't know if I'd say brave.

  4. Lanny and I used to go mushroom hunting in Washington. There were fantastic ones growing in the wild. Then the lumber company closed their area to the public. Oh, well, it was nice while it lasted.

    1. Everybody's so worried about being sued these days, they're not willing to let the most innocent things happen on their property anymore.

    1. They do, don't they? But not nearly as scary as seeing those big white puffballs when you're wandering around in the middle of a dark woods on an autumn afternoon.
