Books take you away from everyday life

The article mentions Betty Hartman, a new addition to the list of authors coming to Albion June 25 for the ALL-IN Block Party.

Books take you away from everyday life: “Vivid” is a word that shows up in many reviews for The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, this month’s book selection for the Kendallville Public Library’s Novel Conversations Group, according to Jenna Anderson of the Kendallville Public Library.

Jeff update

People have been asking, and I'm overdue to give an update on my brother Jeff's status:

On Tuesday he had surgery to repair the leak that developed around his chest tube. The surgeon, Dr. Greenlee, says the surgery was a success, but he did find cancer and removed the upper lobe of Jeff's lung, along with some lymph nodes. More samples were taken, so we're awaiting tests to confirm the diagnosis ... but I assume Greenlee wouldn't have taken that step if he wasn't already darned certain of the diagnosis. I also assume Jeff''s going to have to have some chemotherapy later on, but the next course of action on that front remains to be seen.

So he's back on a chest tube, as the rest of his lung settles into the resulting space. However, he was looking really good on Wednesday and was already up and walking around, as well as sitting in a recliner instead of being stuck in bed. It was some major-league surgery. As of this writing he was in room 2205 (entrance 10 at Parkview Regional Medical Center), but I don't know if and when they might transfer him to another room. We expect he'll be in the hospital another 4-6 days.

Would You Take Humor Writing Advice From This Man?

You would? Well, you really shouldn’t … but what the heck, here’s a little humor writing about humor writing I did for the Write Way Café:

“This may come as a surprise from someone who eagerly awaits the newest episode of The Walking Dead, but I like humor in my entertainment. The only mindless entertainment on that show is when someone’s brain gets eaten.”

He ain't healthy, he's my brother

My brother Jeff went in for a lung biopsy yesterday, but there were complications (aren't there always in my family?) his lung collapsed, and they're having a little trouble getting it to fully reinflate. If a larger tube doesn't work, he'll be transferred from Kendallville (room 231) to a Fort Wayne hospital for further treatment.

I don't have to tell you that stuff relating to the book release, including getting it out on e-book and getting some free copies sent, is on hold for the moment. I'll keep everyone updated on his status; as usual, prayers and good thoughts are appreciated.

fun with fund raising

If you're in Noble County tomorrow afternoon, don't forget to stop by and fill yourself up with all you can eat fish and/or tenderloin! It's a great fund raiser and a way to show support for local volunteer firefighters. Also, it tastes good.

There's a chance I won't be there due to personal stuff I can't talk about. (Maybe they'll keep back some fish for me?) But if I'm not and you don't have a copy yet, ask for another AFD fund raiser, our book Smoky Days and Sleepless Nights: A Century Or So With the Albion Fire Department. There's a box or two laying around up there, and it's also a great fund raiser for the department.

Cottonwood snow

Yeah, I definitely overdid it this week ... especially with all the cottonwood crap flying around. Tomorrow I won't have time for exercise, so my legs will get some rest then.

The land of cottonwood

My lungs had trouble keeping up with my legs today. Judging from the occasional snow squall I encountered, I'm guessing it's my cottonwood allergy.

The problem is, if I don't lose weight and lower my cholesterol my doctor is going to kill me, which would be ironic. So now and then I pass by all the stuff I should be doing,  and brave the allergens.
